Horslips worked in the prog rock era, when a sense of humour seemed to be contrary to the "serious" aspirations of rock stars, and everything was long winded, moody, and deeply rent with serious, earth-shattering meaning. Like many such albums, it has a highfalutin' central theme-- the adventures of the legendary Irish hero CuChulainn-- and also like many such albums, the lyrics are rather humourless in detailing CuChulian's many adventures. The band has the good sense to keep individual songs short-- a rarity in those times of four album side long "opuses"-- and the breaks are more often than not incredible multi-instrument takes on traditional jigs, reels, and airs. The centerpiece of this album, the amazing "Dearg Doom," ably demonstrates this point. Unique album with some great moments. My boyfriend has been wanting this CD and he will love it for Christmas!the original...and still the best: deserves more stars! The fact that this album-- their second-- was a concept album could tell you that Horslips was part of this era. I was uncomfortable with several song lyrics, but that's just me. I was only 9 years old when Horslips released The Táin, so I won’t claim to have queued up and bought it on the day of release…but, my elder brother might well have, and it became a familiar and important part of the soundtrack to the rest of my childhood – even though we lived in a part of Belfast where celtic music wasn’t overtly embraced. Well, anyway...Reviewed in the United States on September 20, 2019 The Tain is based on Tain Bo Cuailnge but in all honestly for the teenage me, it was just great great music coming from five of the best musicians I'd ever heard.
