The sheer, unmatched skill with which Mr. Maugham has told his tale would fill any novelist with envy. It's a psychological study, and is pretty forthright about sex.
Through 41 years of production at The Barn Theatre and now at Meyer Hall, WCT continues that tradition of entertainment and creativity. The mood outside matched my own and was somehow reflected in the book I had just completed; because sometimes you just want a story.
The character of Julia Lambert, a famous, extremely talent actress, who cannot disassociate everyday reality, from the characters she plays on stage is an amazing portrayal and depiction of the insecurities and obsessions that accompany greatness. An early novel, well written with believable characters and situations- but the un-necessary padding, to make a novella into a "novel" made me skim through a great many unrelated passages- The main character, an aging actress, is as believable in today's world, as she was when the book was first written, many, many moons ago! One of those traditions is awarding on member of the cast with the Hambone award.
Julia has become successful by tearing a passion to tatters (Shakespeare) and crying on cue. Please try again later. We are experiencing technical difficulties. By the end of the story, Julia is starring in an updating of The Second Mrs Tanqueray, as an ex-prostitute who just wants to settle down and be respectable.
