Seem like films were a lot bolder in 1970’s. The film Melvin Van Peebles made before he did Sweet Sweetback's Baadassss Song. Jeff Gerber (Cambridge) seems to have it all: a successful career, a nice suburban home, a progressive-thinking wife (Academy Award®-winner Estelle Parsons, Best Supporting Actress, Bonne and Clyde, 1967) and two cute children.
In this sense, the sentiment and the message in this film is as true today as it was when it was made in 1970. Especially, because racial protest, riots etc.
This brings back a good memory for me of watching when it was on the Late Movie in the 70's. Home decor and fashions really were like that! Anywho, great film. Only Godfrey Cambridge could make the transformation believable. Overall good film.
But he's also a loud-mouthed racist who wakes up one morning to discover he's turned into a black man. Suddenly, Gerber is a white bigot in black skin who has todeal with a shocked family, intolerant neighbors, cold shoulders at the office and a back seat on the bus! plot was kind of weak... but it fit in with the movie.
Water-Melon Man is a classic film starring Godfrey Cambridge, a white man who has a wife wife and white children until overnight he turns into a black man who is asked to leave by his wife and rejected by their children. However, I thought that, compared to 'Brother From Another Planet' by John Sayles, which covers the same subject matter and asks the same question (How come, despite the changes put into effect by the civil rights movement, this country is still so damn racist?) With Godfrey Cambridge, Estelle Parsons, Howard Caine, D'Urville Martin. Though it's been 50 years since this movie came out in the theater's across america..we must learn to embrace different people..change is a part of life..
I fast forwarded the movie and then rewound to see how the pieces fell together.
The main character is fascinating and very watchable whilst struggling to cope and adapt to life's unexpected challenges lol.
The doctor's have no explanation and no cure for his sudden change.

I couldn't take the audio though, really bad sound engineering. There are some wonderfully comic moments in the film, the premise is faultless and the use of a traditional middle class white family with 2.2 kids living in suburbia in a sitcom pastiche is perfect. Inter-racial actor's sharing a bed and nudity of a Anglo-European female top-less with a negro male ..Did you catch the door sign painter ..? This feels as powerful as a documentary...but it's funny.

I bought this DVD because it is specified with English subtitles. He had a scene in a Sidney Poitier film.."Guess who's coming to Dinner" that was about inter-racial marriage as well.. it is a little dated and some of the humour doesn't really work any more but a very important movie nonetheless.
The acting is excellent and effectively portrays the desperation, confusion and comedy of the story.
