Two sheep farming brothers have not spoken to each other for forty years due to differences in their personalities, complicated by one brother, Kiddi's, poor temper and alcoholism (it is implied his problems caused him to be disinherited, another source of strife between them), and the other brother, Gummi's, resentment and jealousy over Kiddi's prize-winning ram. A prize-winning ram belonging to Kiddi is found to have Gummi kills his flock before the biohazards team arrive, but hides a few ewes and a ram in his basement, as they are the last of their breed. It is an odd label for RAMS (2015), an endearing tale of an unconventional family consisting of two estranged brothers and their rams who live on adjacent farms in Iceland. Writer/director Grímur Hákonarson crafts a skeletally simple tale of a community of farmers caring for their sheep whose livelihood is threatened by an outbreak of Scrapie, and employs it as a parable for changing with the times, or the creative, belligerent lengths some will go to to avoid doing so. a movie for grown ups. Simple but also so strong and beautiful. Oscar worthy in my opinion. Like many Icelanders, where there are more sheep (800,000) than people (300,000), they share a passion for sheep. 'Rams' has garnered attention from around the world as being a beautifully-shot comedy-drama about two brothers who don't speak to each other and have to solve a local crisis together. Was this review helpful? Whilst the storyline is unimaginative, the distinctive appeal of this Icelandic film-making gem, lies in what I'd term 'the hidden plot'.
Gummi (the quiet, introvert one) and Kiddi (the aggressive, drunkard, trigger-happy one) are a couple of brothers who live right to each other but haven't spoken for 40 years (whatever the reason). The performances are exquisite, and everyone involved with this needs to be commended for sticking with a film with such an odd plot line and allowing it to fully blossom. This is I believe the first movie from Iceland that I saw. On Metacritic, the film has a normalized scoreof 82 out of 100, based on 24 criti… In an age of digital marketing saturation, social media domination and notifications of the latest Disney blockbuster being sent to you while you're sat on the loo, it's always refreshing to have a film sneak up unannounced and give you that warm fuzzy hidden gem feeling. And as someone who has co-existed with animals for much of my life, and who has worked on farms for years, I was touched by the aphorism that you can love - truly love - your animals, and then kill them and eat them. the others are two brothers who have not spoken for 40 years. Movies. Not sure if I would recommend this to just anyone, but sticking with it will be something that some viewers will absolutely be grateful for. Just think of two scenes: one is the younger brother sitting on the edge of the rail, with great but silent sorrow, looking at all his sheep, crowded, but dead, in the angular sheepfold; the other is him watching these dead sheep being poured into the 'mass grave' by a scrapper, with loud and cold sound of the machine around (reminds me of one similar scene in Gomorra). The film goes beyond that to really share the emotional bond of two brothers, one that they thought was broken for the longest but that may actually still reside underneath. 15 out of 19 found this helpful. 4 out of 8 found this helpful.
