I’m not going to completely trash it - Erik Larson is a good story teller with an eye for period detail and a host of well-deployed anecdotes from Edwardian English history.
I know this style doesn't work for everyone, but it works for me. Marconi was obsessive about his work, probably had Aspergers syndrome. The inventor was Guglielmo Marconi, the young Italian genius; the killer was Hawley Harvey Crippen, who murdered his overbearing wife and fled Britain with his mistress, unaware … This is an interesting story. This is definitely an invention that changed the world.
Larson's treatment of Guglielmo Marconi, great-great-great grandfather of the device you're reading this on, does nothing to dispel the miasma of meanness from him. Another brilliant, engrossing true-life novel, completely with two independent yet seamlessly interwoven story lines that he manages to treat equitably through and through.Well, he's gone and done it again!

How completely insensitive, how thoroughly obsessively devoted to his own self and comfort, what a complete rotter of a businessman!After reading Devil in the White City (one of my favorite books of all time), I was very excited to read this book. According to this article (referenced near the bottom) her answer was "Yes I would": I enjoyed parts of Thunderstruck and really had to force myself through others. And, an egotistical but determined inventor. This is why I wanted to read this book and have had a copy for a couple of years now.Thunderstruck, by Erik Larson is a non fiction account of the infamous murder of Belle Elmore by her husband, Hawley Crippen, and the story of Guglielmo Marconi,the inventor of wireless telegraphy. The false columns affixed to its facade were an afterthought, meant to impart a little grandeur.
I learn so many interesting historical details from his books. It's nothing new. I loved This one turned out to be a bit of a disappointment for me. He battles it out with competitors over patents and rights.
The intruder obliged, at which point Bradfield gave him a potent electrical shock, not so powerful as to kill him, but certainly enough to command his attention.
Larson sort of expects his reader to already understand certain elements of how radio waves works, which I don't. Although maybe it just felt that way because the world's fair chapters were just as interesting as the serial killer chapters.

More than 100 years ago, the lives of several very disparate people combined both those elements into the biggest news story of 1910. The narrator did a good job. This book of his, while good, didn’t totally enthrall me like some of his others, but I still liked it. As long as the digressions are interesting in and of themselves, I think they have a corresponding value. So sneaky!

It tries to tell two stories -- the one of Guglielmo Marconi, who invented long-distance radiotelegraphy, and that of "Doctor" Hawley Crippen, patent-medicine developer and (spoilers): husband to a wife who disappeared, leaving him with only patchwork and unbelievable stories about what happened to her. So sneaky! Rear Window is probably my favorite movie of all time, so I had to find out which elements he was referring to. Although it isn't as compelling as either his I am waffling between three and four stars on this book. Why was this book written?
